Year 5

Welcome to Year 5! Our classes our: Owl, taught by Mrs Irfan and Dove, taught by Mrs Smith. Katherine is our LSA who works across both classes.
If your child is in Year 5 and you would like to speak with us, please catch us at the start or end of the day on the playground to arrange a meeting.
In Year 5, we have high expectations of both behaviour and learning. All the children have agreed to our ‘Class Charter’s which follow our school rules of: Be Safe, Show Respect and Engage. The children can tell you more about what this looks like in Year 5.

In Year 5, children are expected to join up their handwriting and practise spellings on a weekly basis. The children will be tested on these spellings the following week. Every term, we will be studying a different novel in our writing lessons - Our first novel is ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

Your child is expected to read at home every night and will be issued an appropriate book to support this. Please help us by encouraging them to read!

Enquiry is what we previously called ‘Topic’. Each term the children will have a question to answer that will end with a ‘challenge’ that the children will complete independently. There will be steps along the way that will equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to do this. They will become Geographers, Historians, Engineers, Artists, Scientists and much more across the year!

In term 1, we are answering the question: ‘What does the earth look like from our solar system?’ by creating a space documentary to present to peers and parents. We will be Scientists, Geographers and Engineers in order to achieve this. Please ask the children to find out more!

P.E is on a Tuesday afternoon. The children need to bring their kit to school and will get changed at lunch time. Please ensure that their P.E. kit is a house coloured T-shirt and sports bottoms in black, grey or navy. They also need trainers or daps. (Football kit or other leisure wear is not acceptable P.E. kit). If your child does not bring in a PE kit, they will given a spare one to wear so please make sure they remember! Miss Stevens (our sports coach) teaches the children for these lessons.

Thursday is homework hand out day and there is a homework club in the main hall on Thursday after school if you wish your child to attend. Please bring homework books back (with completed homework) on a Monday. If you have any questions about homework – ask the teacher.
