This week, in our topic lessons, we learned about apartheid where white and black people were treated unfairly. Nelson Mandela fought to stop apartheid and spent 27 years in prison for this. Finally, the government listened to him and ended apartheid.
Then we learned about what the different colours in the South African flag represented. This is what we found out:
- Red represents blood
- Black represents black people
- Blue represents open sky
- Green represents land
- Yellow represents natural resources
- White represents European people
- The 'Y' in the flag represents unity
