Week 1 Learning - Year 5

Welcome to Week 1’s Learning

Miss Goodwin and Mrs Smith will be updating this post by 9am each day with lots of lovely work for you.

WELL DONE to all of you for your hard work this week - here are some highlights from what has been sent in...

There are 3 sections to look at below. Maths, English and More.

We would like you to aim for 1.5hours of learning each day - 9am is the best time to start when your brain is fresh! Start with the active activity to wake you up and then go from there. On Wednesday afternoon Miss Goodwin and Mrs Smith will be calling you to discuss your work and find out how you are. Look out for our call!

Please read the instructions and then open the image which contains the work.  We will post the answers the following day (eg. The answers for Monday’s work will be posted on Tuesday)

Maths

This week we will focus on addition. Monday and Tuesday will be column method, Wednesday will be word problems, Thursday problem solving and Friday times tables.

Monday:  Copy and complete the column additions in the picture below. Remember you might need to exchange!

Tuesday: Answers for Monday have been posted below in a picture. Today is more column addition practice- this time 5 digits. Remember to keep them in line!

Wednesday: Answers for Tuesday are now below. Today it's word problems.... remember our focus is column addition (hint hint).

Thursday: Answers for Wednesday have now been posted. Today are missing number problems. *BUTTERCUP GROUP - you have some different work today- click here*

 

Friday: Today we would like you to play HIT THE BUTTON by clicking here. If you want a challenge try the division questions or the  square numbers (remember that's where you X the number by itself). You can also play some TT Rockstars if you haven't yet. 

 

 

English

We are going to continue to read our novel The Explorer and focus on a chapter each week. You can read this week’s chapter (The Ruined City) by clicking here or by watching the video below. Monday will be focused on vocabulary, spelling and handwriting. Tuesday will be questions based on the chapter we are asking you to read. Wednesday and Thursday are writing tasks and Friday will be grammar.

You can read books online by logging on to Bug Club at https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/ this will also have grammar activities for you to complete on a Friday.

Monday: Complete the vocabulary tasks in the picture below - focus on neat, joined up handwriting too. 

Tuesday: Monday answers posted below. Questions are based on the chapter 'The Ruined City' which you can read or watch first. 

Wednesday: Today we would like you to write a description of 'The Ruined City'. Please try to use the words from Monday's vocabulary task (underline them). Remember to use capital letters and fulls stops (obviously!), complex sentences (start with a subordinating conjunction - if, since, as, while, although, when, after, before, until or because) and add check your verb tenses!

Friday: Today we would like you to fix our punctuation. Write out this paragraph correctly in lovely neat handwriting. Find it in the pictures below.

 


 

More Learning

Science: This week we would like you to research some scientists linked to the chemistry we were learning about last week. See the image below for more details.

Art: This week we would like you draw a city. Follow the instructions on the ‘Art’ image below. We would love to see your drawings - email or tweet them to us!

GET ACTIVE: This week try some ‘Cosmic Yoga’ each day - check out the video below. There are also some ten minute easy games to get you moving click here.  It has a range of story based yoga routines to follow – pick one that interests you. Tweet us a video of you doing it at home.
