Enquiry: Where is our twin?

This enquiry is all about some of Bristol's twin cities: Bordeaux - France,  Tbilisi- Georgia, Porto Morazan -Nicaragua and Biera - Mozambique

We have set you a 2 tasks about each city or country to help us find out more before delving into some geography next term.

 

Bordeaux - France

This city is located in south-west France and like Bristol, Bordeaux is a large city situated on a river. It is particularly famous for producing grapes for wine.

1. French culture is particularly famous for it’s food and drink. Visit this unit on espresso where you can watch videos, learn vocabulary and try activities all liked to the topic ‘On Mange – We Eat’. (Remember username: student620 password: HannahMore)

Tbilisi- Georgia

Tbilisi is the capital city of the tiny country of Georgia is bordered by TurkeyRussia and Azerbaijan. Here, more people live to be 100 years old than anywhere else in the world. These people are centenarians. Some people live to be 120 years old and remain active until they die. Scientists think people live so long because they spend a lot of time working outdoors and eat a healthy diet.

2. It is set beneath the Caucasus Mountain range and Gudauri is a popular Georgian ski resort. The winter sports resort is located at almost 2 200m/7 200 ft. and skiing is possible between December and April in this region.

Porto Morazan -Nicaragua

Porto Morazan is a city city of Nicaragua, which is located in Central America. It sits between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It has lots of lakes, Volcanoes and beaches. Watch this short video to find out a little bit about Central America.

Biera - Mozambique

Biera is the capital city of Mozambique, which is located in East Africa, the most easterly region of Africa. The national age in Mozambique is young, more than half the population is under 17. Can you use Google maps to identify any other countries near Mozambique?

1. East Africa is known for having some of the earliest found fossils of humans. Click this link to find out how fossils are made.

2. Africa is also known for having lots of traditional folk tales. Listen to the story of ‘The first music’ and draw pictures to go with the story.  You could also research some different folk tales, from a county that is important to you.

Baking Activities

We have collected together some recipes that require few ingredients and aren’t too tricky! If you make anything at home, make sure you send some pictures!

 

Rice krispie cakes – For this recipe you will need; 100g milk chocolate, 50g dark chocolate, broken up, 100g butter, 4 tbsp golden syrup and 100g rice pops.

Cornflake nest cakes – For this recipe you will need; 225g plain chocolate, broken into pieces, 2 tbsp golden syrup, 50g butter and 75g cornflakes.

Simple scones – For this recipe you will need; 50g Butter (unsalted), 200g Self-raising white flour, 1 tbsp caster sugar, pinch of Salt and 125ml whole milk.

Simple shortbread- 60g plain flour, 40g butter, ½ tsp vanilla extract and 20g caster sugar.

Cupcake recipe- This recipe requires 5 ingredients; 120g butter, 120g caster sugar, 1 egg, 1 tsp vanilla extract and 120g self-raising flour. You can decorate them with additional ingredients if you want but these can also be enjoyed plain!

Simple cake -This recipe requires just a few ingredients; 175g really soft butter, 225g self raising flour, 1 1/2 tsp of baking powder, 175g caster sugar, 2 eggs and 45ml milk.

Simple cookie recipe- For this recipe you need 4 main ingredients; 225g butter, 110g caster sugar, 275g plain flour and 1 tsp cinnamon. You could also add 75g white or milk chocolate chips!

Bread- This recipe does not need many ingredients but you will need patience as it takes a bit more time! You would need 450g strong white bread flour, 7g sachet fast action yeast, 40g butter, 1 tsp salt and 300ml warm water.
