In our maths lesson this week, we recapped your Year 5 learning on using coordinates in the first quadrant. We wrote coordinates, plotted points and solved problems. In your home learning you will consolidate these skills in the first quadrant before we move on to look at the four quadrant grid next week.
Some questions might ask you to plot points on a coordinate grid, in which case you'll have to draw your own in your book.
- Day 1: Writing & reading coordinates
- Day 2: solve problems involving coordinates in the first quadrant
- Day 2 Mrs Winterbourne's Group:
- Day 3: Word Problems
- Day 3: Word Problems
Day 1
In class this week, we looked at our book this term for the first time: The Arrival
Task 1
Answer the following questions about the book.
- What are your initial opinions about this book?
Did you like/dislike this book? Why? - The front cover is made to look old. Why do you think this is?
- Why do you think the book is called The Arrival?
- This book is different from all the other books we have read during Year 6 as it has no words.
4a) What are the advantages about a book without words? (What is good about it not having words?)
4b) What are the disadvantages about a book without words? (What is bad/a problem about a book having no words?) - Do you prefer it when a book only has words and no pictures or when a book only has pictures but no words? Why do you prefer this?
Task 2
Design your own different front cover for the book.
Day 2
Have a go at this comprehension task about Migration.
There are different levels of difficulty, getting more difficult as you go down the page.
Day 3
Look at this image. These are lots of the pictures included on the inside covers of The Arrival. Each person has a different story.
Choose one of the people in these images.
Your task is to write about what might have happened to this person. You will need to use your imagination as we don’t know anything about them! You should write about half a page.
You might start like this (I have chosen the young-looking girl just to the left of the cover):
Nadia
This is 8 year old Nadia. She is a passenger on this boat but she is alone. She has left her family behind in Bangladesh because her parents are too elderly to travel and her siblings are too young. Her parents wanted her to go to a new place because her education is important to them and…

If you haven't attended school since it re-opened, here is the work you should do:
